HL7 FHIR Overview
FHIR (Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources – Pronounced as ‘Fire’) is a healthcare information exchange standard that makes use of an HL7-defined set of “resources” to support information sharing by a variety of means, including documents, messages, services, and RESTful interfaces. FHIR is intended to be the next generation of healthcare interoperability. It combines the best features of HL7 Version 2, 3, and CDA while leveraging the latest web service technologies.
Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources
Health Language 7 (HL7) philosophy behind building FHIR is to simplify implementation without sacrificing information integrity. It leverages existing theoretical models to provide a rigorous mechanism for exchanging data between healthcare applications.
FHIR has the ambitious goal for integration capabilities to be built into the EHR itself, along with the other aspects of authentication and security. This will, over time, eliminate the need for expensive integration projects and licenses. Additionally, the use of modern concepts, such as RESTful APIs, and accompanying documentation, to make it much easier for developers and applications to quickly connect and get the data needed.

HL7 FHIR Compliance Services
FHIR is a standard that makes use of the HL7-defined set of “resources” to support information sharing. FHIR defines resources for clinical and administrative content (e.g. Observation, Patient, etc.) as well as resources for “infrastructure” purposes.
The design of FHIR is based on RESTful web services. This is in contrast to the majority of IHE profiles which are based on SOAP web services. With RESTful web services, the basic HTTP operations are incorporated including Create, Read, Update and Delete.
